UPDATE: Ernestine Carter began her medical career in the 1970s, after she received her degree in nursing from Cleveland State Community College.
She was the first Black admissions nurse, and the first Black member of the Ask-A-Nurse program.
Now, her legacy will continue shaping the next generation of healthcare workers through a newly announced endowed nursing scholarship in her name at Chattanooga State Community College.
During a ceremony this week, the college unveiled the Ernestine Carter Endowed Nursing Scholarship, created to honor Carter’s decades of service and dedication to patient care.
