An Albany County man is accused of abandoning his dog and then falsely claiming the animal had been found without an owner.

Coeymans Police responded to Orchard Avenue in Ravena on Tuesday, Nov. 11, for a report of an abandoned dog, the agency said. Officers arrived and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the animal’s condition and location.

The dog’s owner — identified as Donald Davis, 25, of Ravena — told officers the animal had been abandoned, according to police. Investigators quickly determined that the dog actually belonged to Davis and he no longer wanted to care for the animal, police said.

Davis was arrested after determining the report was false. He is charged with abandonment of an animal, falsely reporting an incident, and providing a false written statement.

Davis was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to return to Coeymans Town Court at a later date.
