Buddy has spent months waiting for a new home at the Bergen County Animal Shelter after being surrendered during a family crisis.
The 10-year-old pit bull mix and another dog were brought to the shelter in mid-July after their owner suffered a medical emergency and could no longer care for them, shelter officials said. Buddy has been hoping for a forever family ever since.
Staff describe him as athletic and eager to please. He can be shy when meeting new people, but once he feels safe, he softens — licking, nuzzling, rolling onto his back and soaking up any attention he can get.
Buddy does well with other dogs and is approved for teens 15 and older, shelter staff said. He can be strong on a leash. Because of his size, strength and occasional nervousness, the ideal adopter will be someone who has owned dogs as an adult and can give him patience and confidence.
Buddy will benefit from continued leash and obedience training, but caregivers say he’s motivated, smart and learns quickly — especially when he trusts his handler. Buddy may also be protective of the person walking him, so a steady, experienced adopter is the best fit.
Buddy has waited long enough. Now he’s hoping the right person sees him — and gives him the second chance he deserves.
