Dozens of schools remain closed in the ACT, Tasmania and South Australia today as the clean-up and disposal of coloured sand, feared to be laced with asbestos, continues across the country.

Each state and territory has taken a different approach to dealing with the recalled products, with the ACT requiring licensed asbestos removalists to be called in to schools , while some other jurisdictions are advising that the products be double-bagged and disposed of according to instructions.

The asbestos that has been found in some coloured sand products is naturally occurring, and advice from officials and experts so far has been that the risk of exposure is low.
