Cheers rang out in a packed Bangladeshi courtroom on Nov 17, when the country’s ousted prime minister was sentenced to death for violently suppressing student protests in 2024. Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal found the 78-year-old former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, guilty of crimes against humanity, after her orders during a bloody summer crackdown last year led to around 1,400 deaths and 25,000 injuries.
