A man has been shot dead by police during an armed standoff after he stabbed another man in the neck and left him fighting for his life.

Police officers received reports of the stabbing at an intersection in Caboolture , in Queensland's south east, before 3.45am on November 18.

The armed suspect fled the scene, at the corner of Beerburrum Road and Commercial Drive, on foot, police said.
