A potential diplomatic opening between the United States and Venezuela's president Nicolás Maduro has generated mixed reactions on Monday in the streets of Caracas, where an ongoing economic and social crisis continues to batter ordinary Venezuelans.
"They have had so many talks and have not solved anything," said Jam Carlos Farías, a 45-year-old retail worker, voicing his disillusionment.
"I don't see any solution," he said.
His reaction is a reflection of the exhaustion people feel watching a country in crisis for years.
For Yris Marín, a 57-year-old schoolteacher, the priority is not high-stakes diplomacy but the daily impact of those tensions.
“Let them do what’s best for the people, because we’re the ones caught in the middle, the ones who carry the heaviest burden," she said, adding that the average Venezuelan worries about how to put food on the table.
On Monday, President Donald Trump did not rule out military action against Venezuela despite bringing up a potential diplomatic opening with Maduro.
Venezuela has insisted that a U.S. military buildup and strikes on alleged drug boats near his South American country are designed to push him out of office.
