A Kelowna man says jail time is nothing compared to the agonies he puts himself through for choking and threatening to kill a woman.

James Plover should be sentenced to between nine and 18 months in jail for a vicious assault that stemmed from a family disagreement about whether to go swimming, a court heard Monday.

“I torture myself every day, more than the time you could give me,” Plover told Provincial Court Judge David Ruse, who reserved sentencing until Nov. 27.

Crown asked for 18 months, saying the convictions for the assault and threats should be served consecutively. Defence asked for nine months, saying the episode should be considered as one event.
