A man who prosecutors say waited inside his ex-girlfriend’s apartment before fatally shooting her has been sentenced to life in prison.
Malik Coleman had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon in the 2023 killing of 18-year-old Janaya Baker.
Reno police responding to a North Virginia Street apartment on Nov. 16, 2023, found Baker just inside her doorway with a gunshot wound to the head.
Prosecutors said surveillance video showed Baker leaving for work earlier that evening and Coleman entering around 5 p.m., staying inside until she returned. He was seen leaving shortly after the shooting.
Police said the two had recently ended their relationship and shared the lease until Baker requested his removal two weeks earlier.
