Are India Test captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir not on the same page as far as the nature of home pitches is concerned? Given how the first Test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens culminated in an embarrassing defeat for the hosts, the question becomes pertinent.

Why?

Prior to the start of the two-match Test series against West Indies at home a few weeks back, Gill had indicated that the days of India dishing out rank turners are long gone, and they are now going to play on sporting pitches that have something for the bowlers and the batters.

“…we would be looking to play on wickets that offer both to the batsmen and to the bowlers," Gill had told reporters.
