WEST HAZLETON, Pa. — One person is dead and several are injured after a multi-vehicle pileup on I-81 on Monday in Luzerne County . The cause of this accident? Black ice on the road.

Chief Brandon Cressman of the West Hazleton Fire Department says, "Motor vehicles can lose control, and they lose traction on black ice that you can't really see, and it causes them to spin out."

At around 6 a.m. Monday, that's exactly what happened. Chief Cressman says one car spun out, causing a chain reaction: "I was the first person there with our engine, and upon our arrival, we did have multiple vehicles involving a tractor-trailer that was jack-knifed on the interstate."

This resulted in one person dying and multiple people with injuries.
