A major technical issue is delaying flights at three airports across the country including Perth.

An issue with communication systems at the Melbourne air traffic service centre happened around 2pm on Tuesday afternoon, causing flight delays at Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne airports.

An Airservices Australia spokesperson, the company in charge of air traffic operations, said the technical issue has prompted staff to revert to manually entering flight plans in some instances.

“Safety, air traffic control and communication between air traffic controllers and aircraft are unaffected,” the spokesperson said.

“The main operational capability being impacted is that we have reverted to manual entering of flight plans in some circumstances.
