CLEVELAND, Ohio — Inside the Case Western Reserve University Wade Park Community Engagement Center, art is doing what it does best—breaking through walls.

The center’s new exhibit, “One Art One Community,” features 46 works created by 16 artists incarcerated at Grafton Correctional Institution.

It’s an arresting and deeply human collection—portraits, drawings and mixed-media pieces paired with written reflections from community members who viewed them.

“For me, this piece brought to light the simplest form of sweetness and humanity,” reads one response.

Another describes “chaos and beauty” in a portrait, noting “the darkness around the eyes” and “the shadows of another self.”

Haunting is an understatement.
