About 40 per cent of Gen Z Canadians — those between 18 and 24 years old — don’t know the meaning of best before dates, according to an online survey done in partnership between Dalhousie University’s agri-food analytics lab and Too Good To Go, a social impact company fighting food waste.
They found that 25 per cent of Gen Z’s discard food with expired best before dates, even if it is safe to eat, which is an average cost of $329 of food waste per household each year.
“That was definitely one of the very insightful data that we collected through this research,” said Nicolas Dot, spokesperson for Too Good To Go. “(There’s) some kind of generational gap and definitely around knowledge there is a strong gap.”
