A 2024 report reveals that New Mexico's child welfare program showed no improvement compared to previous years, with some areas worsening, according to field experts involved in the Kevin S. settlement case.
This annual report aims to improve care for New Mexico children, and data from last year revealed that more than 3,000 children were in state custody at some point during the year.
George Davis, a child psychiatrist who helps monitor the state's progress from the plaintiff's perspective, noted that 2024 was remarkable in that many of the milestones achieved in previous years were lost.
The 2024 report shows there were over 700 instances where children were placed in CYFD offices or its receiving center, which is double the number from 2023. The report also cites high caseloads as
