The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken a landmark step to curb digital fraud by mandating pre-tagging of variable components in SMS content templates. This directive aims to prevent the misuse of registered templates, typically undertaken by fraudsters inserting harmful URLs and callback numbers to deceive unsuspecting users.

According to TRAI's new rule, all access providers must ensure that SMS templates clearly mark changing parts, such as links or numbers, allowing telecom operators to detect and obstruct fraudulent or harmful commercial messaging. The absence of such tagging has allowed malicious activities, including phishing, data theft, and financial fraud.
