The Government has responded to a petition calling for the income tax personal allowance to be increased from its current frozen rate of £12,570 to £20,000.

The most recent petition posted on the UK Government and Parliament website argues that raising the allowance would help people manage increasing rent, mortgages , council tax , and energy bills .

"Some families can’t afford to go back to work after having children due to childcare costs wiping their whole income," the call to action states.

Critics of the current policy say that fiscal drag - the name given to a process which involves keeping the personal allowance frozen while wages and prices rise - is effectively a stealth tax that pulls more people into paying into higher tax brackets.
