Uncontrolled growth is a bad thing because it creates imbalance, and all living things and all natural systems depend on balance.
Shielded by our technology as we are, we may not see it, but human activities like economic growth and development are changing the balance of the environment in the same way that an uncontrolled growth of cancer cells changes the balance of the body.
The continued growth of human activities is not sustainable for the same reasons cancer is eventually fatal ... unless it stops. That may sound harsh, but remember that cancer can go into remission, if it stops growing. (I speak from personal experience on that).
Humans could “go into remission,” too, if enough of us wanted to. It would mean voluntarily reducing consumption, for the sake of a livable future.
