An inmate serving a life sentence for murder at Dade Correctional Institution attacked and repeatedly stabbed an officer at the prison on Monday, authorities said.

Jarvis D. Fortson, 44, is facing new charges of attempted first-degree murder with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer with violence, an arrest report said. Miami-Dade Corrections

Records showed Fortson was already serving a life sentence for first-degree murder at the prison in Florida City related to a 1999 case in Gadsden County.

According to the report, Florida Department of Corrections Officer Raj Mitchell was on duty on Monday when he noticed Fortson was out of his cell.

The two got into a verbal exchange and Fortson became "verbally hostile" towards Mitchell, the report said.
