The Supreme Court has expressed displeasure over the shortcomings in the code formulated for the marketing of medicines. The SC said on Tuesday that the process in the code should be robust enough for a consumer to easily file a complaint if defrauded. Also, timely action should be taken against the defaulting company.

The Court was hearing a petition related to preventing alleged unethical marketing practices by pharmaceutical companies. The petition has been filed by the Federation of Medical & Sales Representatives Associations of India and others. It demanded that until an effective law is enacted, the Supreme Court should either set its own guidelines or make the existing code mandatory with amendments.
