A man was struck and killed last week after he walked into traffic on southbound Highway 87 in San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 7:40 p.m. Friday when a Ford Fusion traveling about 65 mph hit the pedestrian, who stepped on the freeway near Taylor Street for reasons that remain unclear.
The man died at the scene about 10 minutes later, the CHP said in a statement Monday.
The driver, who was not injured, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Officers said they do not suspect alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
All southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for roughly two hours while officers examined the scene, and traffic was diverted onto Taylor Street.
