WASHINGTON — Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said President Donald Trump's proposed $2,000 rebate checks could become a possibility, but it would need congressional approval.

In an interview with Maria Bartiromo on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures," Bessent said that the checks "could go out."

"We will see," he said. "We need legislation for that."

Bessent also gave more details on eligibility for the checks, saying that they would be "for working families" and would have an income limit.

On Monday afternoon, the president even set a timeline for his proposal.

Answering questions in the Oval Office, Trump said Americans can expect the checks around mid-2026.

"We have thousands of dollars for individuals of moderate income, middle income. We are going to pay down debt," he said.
