KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - A Wyandotte County Sheriff’s deputy accused of kneeling on an inmate’s back for more than a minute appeared virtually for a first hearing on Tuesday.
Charles Adair died while in custody at the Wyandotte County Jail in July. Deputy Richard Fatherley was placed on unpaid leave after the State of Kansas Coroner’s Report ruled his death a homicide .
Fatherley received a criminal summons to appear in court, rather than an arrest warrant, which is more commonplace for a person charged with murder. Fatherley has not been booked into jail, and no mugshot is available.
Adair’s family and friends gathered outside the Wyandotte County Courthouse Tuesday morning, just hours before Deputy Fatherley appeared in court for the first time.
