Santa Fe police called for residents around the 1900 block of Hopi Road to shelter in place while officers investigated a "suspicious item" in the area Tuesday afternoon.

Deputy Chief Ben Valdez said the agency had sent its Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, which includes a specialty vehicle and a bomb-handling robot, "as a precaution."

"We’re looking into a report of a suspicious item and have folks on scene," Valdez said. "Right now, everything seems to be stabilized."

An alert issued by the city Emergency Management Department shortly before noon noted the street was closed and urged people to avoid the area.

Valdez said the agency would provide more information once the incident was resolved.
