NEWPORT NEWS — An 8-year-old boy is critically injured following a hit-and-run Monday evening.
Just after 4:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in the area of 28th Street and Orcutt Avenue, according to a release. That’s in the city’s Chestnut neighborhood, near Pearl Bailey Library.
The boy, who has not been identified, was attempting to cross Orcutt Avenue in the crosswalk when he was hit by an SUV heading westbound on 28th Street, police said. The driver of the vehicle did not stop and was not on scene when officers arrived, according to police.
The boy was taken to a hospital for treatment of potentially life-threatening injuries. He is in serious but stable condition, the release said.
