FORT OGLETHORPE, Ga. — The Fort Oglethorpe Police Department (FOPD) is warning locals about a recurring scam that is taking place around the area.
They say individuals are posing as law enforcement officers and are contacting citizens claiming they owe money, have active warrants, or must make immediate payments to avoid arrest.
The scammers are demanding the payments be made through gift cards, Bitcoin transfers or other non-traditional methods.
The FOPD is asking individuals to remember the following:
No officer from the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department or any legitimate law enforcement agency will ever call and demand payment in lieu of a warrant.
We will never request or accept any form of payment over the phone — especially gift cards or Bitcoin transfers.
