STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A public school in Castleton Corners initiated shelter-in protocols on Tuesday afternoon.

A text alert issued around 2:15 p.m. by the New York City Department of Education notified parents and guardians of students at PS 29 at 1581 Victory Blvd. of the situation.

“P.S. 029 Bardwell is Shelter-in. Everyone is safe. BRT (building response team) is activated. Do not come to P.S. 029 Bardwell. No one is permitted to enter or leave the building until it is lifted…”

A source with knowledge of the incident said that an individual had managed to climb up scaffolding and make their way onto the roof of the school building.

A photo provided to the Advance/SILive.com from the scene shows several individuals who appeared to be wearing police uniforms on the scaffolding.
