The New York Mets cut their losses on right-handed starter Frankie Montas, designating him for assignment Nov. 18 and choosing to eat his $17 million salary for 2026.
Montas, 32, was signed to a two-year, $34 million deal last winter, despite an injury-plagued past. He tore a lat muscle in spring training and did not make his season debut until June 24, and then made nine appearances before succumbing to an elbow injury.
He underwent Tommy John surgery after the year, and the Mets opted to open up his 40-man roster spot now. The club selected outfielder Nick Morabito to the active roster.
New York missed the playoffs by one game this past season, its 83-79 record a step back from a surprise NLCS appearance in 2024.
