Retired Somerset Police Chief Doug Nelson has formally filed to run for Pulaski County Sheriff, bringing a 30-year career in local law enforcement and a detailed platform he says will make the sheriff’s office “more efficient, more responsive, and more visible across the county.”

Nelson, a Pulaski County High School graduate, holds a bachelor’s degree in Police Administration from Eastern Kentucky University with a minor in Corrections and Juvenile Justice. He began his career as a deputy under the late Sheriff Sam Catron and later rose through the ranks of the Somerset Police Department, retiring as chief. Along the way, he earned numerous certifications from the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, including Chief Executive, Executive, Manager, Supervisor, Investigator, and Police Instruct
