Looking to Texas for inspiration, Premier Doug Ford’s government is considering new penalties that would compel impaired drivers convicted of killing a parent to pay child support.
“It’s important that we’re looking after the victims,” Attorney General Doug Downey said Tuesday, providing little further information such as what payouts could be.
He cited a 2023 Texas law requiring drivers found guilty of “intoxication manslaughter” to pay support to children of parents or guardians who lose their lives to drunk drivers until the children turn 18 or graduate from high school.
“We’re going to find what’s going to work best, and then we will take action,” Downey added, noting anti-impaired driving measures in other jurisdictions are also being reviewed.
