GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — An outage at software company Cloudflare impacted some of the world’s biggest websites on Tuesday. The company said a technical failure is to blame.

Services are mostly back now, but some users may still notice slowdowns. Cloudflare helps power much of the internet, and tech experts said outages like this are a reminder to stay prepared.

“I think estimates are like, maybe like 20 to 30% of all websites across the world use Cloudflare in some capacity,” said Brian Abraham with Grand Rapids technology company I3 Business Solutions .

Cloudflare protects and routes traffic for thousands of websites. The outage knocked out hundreds of platforms including ChatGPT, X and Spotify. Abraham said the disruption hit fast and surprised both users and businesses.
