TRENTON — New Jersey users of social media platforms would gain a way to report fraud on their accounts under legislation released by the Senate Commerce Committee on Monday.

The bill, S3017, would require the sites’ operators to provide a 24-hour, toll-free phone number to contact live customer service. The sponsor is Sen. Andrew Zwicker (D - District 16).

Americans lost more than $1.4 billion through social media scams in 2023, according to a statement issued by Zwicker.
