PHILADELPHIA (AP) — In a story published Nov. 12, 2025, about the last penny minted, The Associated Press reported that the last U.S. coin to be discontinued was the half-penny in 1857, according to Treasurer Brandon Beach. The Treasury Department has clarified that other coins have been discontinued, but the only other time the U.S. Mint stopped producing a coin of any denomination because of its low value was the half-penny in 1857.
