AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Local food assistance organizations are still playing catch-up weeks after the government shutdown ended, with demand remaining higher than normal following more than 40 days of federal furloughs and lost SNAP benefits.
Golden Harvest and the Salvation Army both report seeing a huge spike in need throughout the shutdown period, with effects continuing to impact the community.
Food banks working to keep up
Golden Harvest continues to order more food, but it goes right back out the door as soon as it arrives, according to the organization.
The Salvation Army says it has already provided more utility assistance and seen more requests for toys than ever before, showing that many people in the community are making hard decisions on everyday needs.
