The Government has responded to calls for a ban on the sale of fireworks to the general public - after thousands of people across the UK called for a change in the law.

More than 180,000 people have signed a petition to Parliament - including thousands here in Greater Manchester - calling for the sale of fireworks except for use at council-approved events.

The petition to Parliament states: " Limit the sale of fireworks to those running local council approved events only.

"Ban the sale of fireworks to the general public to minimise the harm caused to vulnerable people and animals. Defenceless animals can die from the distress caused by fireworks.
