COLUMBUS, Ohio -A state legislative committee advanced a bill Tuesday that would standardize kindergarten cutoff dates – with an amendment that would correct a scoring error on state biology tests for high school students.
The Ohio Senate Education Committee passed House Bill 114 with the amendment.
The bill is expected to be on the floor Wednesday, said John Fortney, a spokesman for Ohio Senate President Rob McColley, a Henry County Republican who influences the voting schedule.
HB 114 states that a child must be 5 years old by the first day of school to start kindergarten.
Under current law, local school boards must pass resolutions requiring children to be five years old by Aug. 1 or Sept. 30 to enter kindergarten. This can create problems for students who, for instance, don’t tur
