The Mets are using money to open up a 40-man roster spot.

On Tuesday, the Mets added outfielder Nick Morabito to the 40-man roster while cutting ties with right-hander Frankie Montas, who opted into the second year of his contract on Nov. 4 .

To make room, the Mets designated Montas for assignment and placed him on waivers for the purpose of granting his unconditional release. Montas, who will miss next season because of Tommy John surgery, had exercised the $17 million player option in his contract.

Montas ends his Mets stint after one season (38 2/3 innings) and a 6.28 ERA.

Morabito, a 2022 second-round pick, has steadily climbed the system thanks to a strong on-base profile and top-tier speed. He stole bases at an elite clip in the minors this year, and scouts consistently rate
