With gas prices no higher than this time last year, AAA New Mexico is predicting record-breaking Thanksgiving travel in the Mountain Region from Nov. 25 to Dec. 1.
An estimated 6.3 million residents will travel 50 miles or more from home — a 2.9% increase from last year and a new record for the region. That adds up to nearly 181,000 more people on the road than last year.
The national outlook is also for a record 81.8 million Americans traveling for Thanksgiving, an increase of 1.6 million.
"From road trips on I-25 and I-40 to flights out of Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexican go the extra mile to spend time with family and friends. It's one of busiest — and most meaningful — time to travel each year," said Galen Grillo, vice president and general manager of AAA New Mexico.
