SEATTLE — King County Council approved temporary funding Tuesday to keep Harbor Island Studios operational through June, but the fate of Washington's largest film production facility remains uncertain as the county grapples with a $150 million budget deficit.
The council must decide by June whether to continue funding the facility or let it close.
The decision buys time for county leaders to find a longer-term funding solution for the 100,000-square-foot facility. The studio, converted from an old flour mill and formally opened in 2023, represents King County's only major publicly funded film production infrastructure.
So far this year, Harbor Island Studios has employed 1,824 people.
