According to the industry group Wind Energy Ireland (WEI), the combined total of 41pc was the third highest on record for the month of October.

The average wholesale price of electricity last month was €100.70 per megawatt-hour (MWh), down from €123.45 during the same month last year.

The price on days with the most wind power led to the average cost of a megawatt-hour of electricity falling to €55.84, according to WEI, but it more than doubled to €137.98 on days when the electricity grid relied almost entirely on fossil fuels.
