REDMOND, Wash. — Redmond residents urged city officials on Tuesday night to dismantle the city’s network of automated license plate readers, saying the technology poses an unacceptable threat to privacy and could expose local drivers to federal immigration enforcement.
Following Tuesday's study session, several residents called on the City Council to immediately terminate Redmond’s contract with Flock Safety, the private vendor that operates 24 license plate–reading cameras across the city. 21 of the cameras were funded through grants; three were donated by a homeowners association.
“The only acceptable remediation is complete cancellation of Redmond’s contract with Flock,” one resident told council members.
