People are unknowingly wasting money by storing everyday kitchen staples incorrectly - including olive oil, which has become one of the UK’s most expensive pantry items, according to experts. Food and drink inflation hit 4.5% this autumn, and over five years prices have risen by around 37%.

But few products have surged more dramatically than olive oil. A 500ml bottle has jumped 110% since 2021 (from £3.54 to £7.45), with some premium oils now reaching £18 per litre. And according to home cooks online and storage specialists, many Brits are accidentally shortening the life of their oil with one common mistake.
