A 16-year-old Grade 9 pupil from Sinda Day Secondary School in Zambia’s Eastern Province has reportedly taken her own life after consuming maize preservative tablets.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, which occurred on 17 November 2025 around 17:00 hours in Chamabvu Compound.

According to police, the girl, identified as Memory Banda, was discovered by her father behind their home with a boyfriend. He reprimanded her, advising her to stop the behavior and focus on her education.

It is alleged that the father’s counsel upset the girl, leading her to ingest maize preservative tablets in an attempt to take her own life.

She was rushed to Sinda Zonal Health Facility, where she later died. Her body has since been taken to St. Francis Mission Hospi
