A federal inquiry into the extent, regulation and management of PFAS has found Australia's public health advice is at odds with the growing international consensus on the health risks of "forever chemicals".
The Senate Select Committee has handed down its final report, containing a total of 47 recommendations.
The report calls for the establishment of a national PFAS monitoring program, as well as standardised PFAS guidelines for drinking water.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) encompass a group of more than 14,000 synthetic chemicals, used in all kinds of industrial and domestic products, from firefighting foam to non-stick cookware.
PFAS are known for their resistance to decay, taking hundreds to thousands of years to naturally break down.
