National Australia Bank’s chief executive Andrew Irvine has declared Australia should be an “energy superpower” even as he flagged worries east coast states could face gas supply shortfalls by 2028.

Speaking at a parliamentary Economics Committee on Wednesday, Mr Irvine told policymakers lower energy prices were essential to grow the economy and boost businesses.

“The conversation we should be having in this country is how do we get more supply so we can bring down energy prices,” Mr Irvine said.

Addressing the committee, Mr Irvine said gas could be a key power supply as banks and the government aim to meet aggressive net zero targets.
