Snow has begun to fall in London this morning, marking a significant shift in the weather. Images from Queen's Park in North West London and Northolt show the white flakes descending. Notably, broadcaster Piers Morgan shared footage of the snowfall in West London on social media platform X.
This wintery weather follows the Met Office's issuance of several weather warnings for snow and ice across the UK. An amber alert has been declared for parts of Yorkshire and the North East, where accumulations could reach as much as 25cm (10 inches). The Met Office has also warned that temperatures may plummet to -11C overnight on Thursday in certain areas of Scotland.
The adverse conditions are expected to disrupt travel across the country. Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong stated, "Cold Arctic air from the north is firmly in charge of the UK’s weather, bringing the first notable cold snap of this autumn and giving an early taste of winter weather."
Armstrong added, "As a result, winter hazards are likely through the next few days, with snow and ice a particular hazard, and the coldest conditions likely on Wednesday and Thursday." He noted that wintry showers would particularly affect areas exposed to the brisk northerly wind, including Northern Ireland, southwest Wales, southwest England, northeast England, and the northern half of Scotland.
While not every location will experience lying snow, the Met Office predicts that areas with frequent showers could see accumulations of 2-5 cm. In higher elevations in Scotland, 15-20 cm may accumulate, with the North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds potentially receiving 15-25 cm.
Weather modelling maps indicate that snow could blanket most of the country by tomorrow morning, with the heaviest accumulations expected in Scotland and northern England. However, significant snowfall in the Midlands or southern England is not anticipated.
According to BBC Weather's forecast for today, "Any rain and hill sleet in the south-east will soon clear. Sunny spells for many, but windy with sleet and snow showers in north Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the south-western and North Sea coasts."
Tonight, much of the UK is expected to remain dry and clear, although northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the western and eastern coasts may experience further wintry showers. The forecast for tomorrow suggests continued cold and windy conditions, with sleet and snow showers in northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the North Sea coasts, while other areas will enjoy dry weather with sunny spells.
