For more than 15 years, Dauphin County has provided personal take home cars for its commissioners.
But why? It’s the only third-class county in Pennsylvania to do so and it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars that other counties don’t have to shell out, including thousands in gas costs each year where other counties only pay hundreds.
The county, facing a fiscal crisis that could lead to a second large tax hike within two years, pays for a car for each commissioner, along with registration and insurance, and gives them a credit card for gas.
In 2023 and 2024, the county bought three vehicles for its commissioners to take home using $146,685 of local share gaming funds, a tax paid by casinos.
