Scientists from the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) have used their 1.2-meter telescope at Mount Abu to observe the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, currently moving away from the inner Solar System after its perihelion passage.
Observations conducted between November 12-15, 2025, included both imaging and spectroscopic modes, providing detailed data about the comet's structure and composition.
The telescope images, displayed in false colour, reveal a near-circular coma, the glowing envelope of gas and dust surrounding the comet's nucleus. This coma forms as the Sun’s heat causes frozen ices on the comet’s nucleus to sublimate, releasing gas and dust into space.
Comet 3I/ATLAS is the third known interstellar comet to enter our Solar System, discovered in July 2025 by the ATLAS survey. Tr
