Kunal goes to school in central India. He could barely see what was being taught, because he was born with cataracts in both eyes.

His math teacher explained, “Kunal would tilt his head or bring the book very close to his eyes just to read. It was heartbreaking to watch.”

Kunal also faced constant bullying due to his poor vision.

His mother, Babita, said, “Kunal would come home in tears, saying his classmates called him ‘blind.’ But it was true that he was entirely dependent on someone else for everything.”

She took him to a hospital to see about getting cataract surgeries, but as a single mother on a limited income, she lost all hope.

Babita said, “They told me his surgeries would cost $400, but I only earn $35 a month as a maid. I couldn’t even dream of affording it.”
