WA Day Festival punters will be immersed in First Nations storytelling this weekend when Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company presents Kaarla Kaatijin.
Meaning “understanding fire”, Kaarla Kaatijin seamlessly weaves together traditional Noongar Dreaming stories and contemporary storytelling.
Viewers will learn about the importance of kaarla (fire), how the kulbardi (magpie) got its colours, the bravery of the djitty djitty (willie wagtail), and more.
Designed as a fun, interactive show for young and old, actors Shinade Mourambine, Jaden Thomas and Shaquita Nannup say audience interaction is more than welcome — in fact, they encourage it.
“It’s fun to perform for kids, because they can be so unpredictable,” Mourambine said.
